2016 Shale Network Workshop

A tentative date has been set for the 2016 Shale Network workshop as organizers search for new funding to hold the conference for a fifth year.

If funding can be obtained, the conference will be held May 19 and 20 in State College.

Over its first four years, the workshop has provided an important platform for scientists to share what they have learned about the impacts of Marcellus Shale gas drilling, and to discuss the best ways to monitor water quality in the future.

The workshop has also brought together diverse groups, including citizen scientists, faculty, researchers and representatives from government agencies, industry and nonprofits – giving all a voice at the table.

The Shale Network is collaboration between Penn State, the University of Pittsburgh, Dickinson College and the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science Inc (CUASHI) to collect and analyze data on water quality in the Marcellus Shale drilling region.

The network was funded by a four-year grant from the National Science Foundation, and the grant is in its final year. Researchers are looking at options for continuing the project and the workshops.
